US wants a fair trade deal with China – Trump

President Donald Trump has declared that the United States is in active discussions with multiple countries, including China, as the White House pushes for stronger trade agreements.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters that while he has no immediate plans to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. officials are deep in talks with their Chinese counterparts.

“They want to make a deal. They want it badly. But it has to be a fair deal,” Trump emphasized.

While he didn’t confirm whether any trade agreement would be finalized this week, he hinted that such announcements were possible “very soon.”

This comes amid a series of bold tariff moves by the Trump administration. Since April 2, the U.S. has slapped:

  • 10% tariffs on most countries,

  • 25% tariffs on autos, steel, and aluminum,

  • And a staggering 145% tariff on Chinese imports.

Although some of these were paused for 90 days, the clock is ticking toward implementation, with July 8 as a critical date.

Trump also took a swipe at past U.S.-China relations, claiming that former President Richard Nixon’s opening to China was “the worst thing he ever did.” He doubled down on accusations that China has “ripped off” the U.S. for decades.

In an NBC interview aired Sunday, Trump struck a cautiously optimistic tone, saying the U.S. has gone “cold turkey” on China trade, cutting massive losses, but is open to negotiation.

“We’re not losing a trillion dollars because we’re not doing business with them right now… but they want to make a deal,” he said.

The world watches closely as the two economic giants inch toward what could be a game-changing trade showdown—or breakthrough.
