Ibadan Tragedy: NANS JCC Oyo Calls for Accountability and Justice in Updated Report

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Oyo Axis has received updated and confirmed information regarding the tragic incident that occurred earlier today in Ibadan.

It has now been confirmed that the victim of the fatal shooting was not the WAEC candidate himself, but his brother, who was accompanying their father while on their way to the exam center. The father had reportedly stopped at a vulcanizer’s stand to fix a flat tire, and in an urgent effort to ensure the WAEC candidate did not miss his exam.

It was during this moment of urgency that a police officer, in pursuit of another vehicle, allegedly fired a shot that struck and killed the brother of the WAEC candidate — an innocent young Nigerian who became a victim of a trigger-happy officer.

This is a heart-wrenching and unacceptable tragedy. NANS JCC Oyo Axis stands with the grieving family and the entire community in mourning this senseless loss of life.

We are calling for:
– A full, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident.
– ⁠Immediate identification and suspension of the officer involved.
– ⁠Justice for the family of the deceased.
– ⁠A review and reformation of police protocols, especially in civilian areas.

While we understand the pain and outrage in the aftermath of this event, we continue to urge all youths and students to remain peaceful and orderly as we pursue justice through all necessary channels.

This tragedy is a stark reminder of the urgency for reform in our security systems and the protection of innocent lives, especially those of our young people.

We will not rest until justice is served.
