CAN Congratulates Catholic Church on Election of Pope Leo

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has officially congratulated the Roman Catholic Church on the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American to ascend to the papacy and the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church.

CAN Celebrates Historic Election of Pope Leo XIV

In a press release issued on Friday, May 9, 2025, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described the election of Pope Leo XIV as a significant milestone for Catholics across the world. The message expressed joy and solidarity with the Catholic faithful on this monumental occasion.

“The emergence of Pope Leo XIV signifies renewal and hope for the Catholic Church,” said Okoh.
“CAN is confident that the new Pontiff will advance peace, justice, and inclusiveness, continuing the legacy of his predecessors.”

The Christian body also offered prayers for wisdom, strength, and divine guidance throughout the new Pope’s pontificate.

Pope Leo XIV: First American Pope in Catholic Church History

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, was elected as Pope Leo XIV, making history as the first American-born pope. The announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where Cardinal Dominique Mamberti declared “Habemus Papam” to thunderous cheers in St. Peter’s Square.

Pope Leo XIV previously served as the Superior General of the Order of St. Augustine (Augustinians) and is widely respected for his deep theological background and pastoral experience.

A New Chapter After the Death of Pope Francis

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff and the first Latin American pope, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. Pope Francis was known for his progressive leadership and efforts to reform the Church and engage marginalized communities globally.

With the election of Pope Leo XIV, many religious observers see an opportunity for continued reform and unity within the global Christian community.

CAN’s Message: A Call for Unity and Righteous Leadership

The Christian Association of Nigeria highlighted the shared mission among Christian denominations to uphold truth, peace, and moral leadership in a world increasingly divided by conflict and injustice.

“May God guide and strengthen him in his ministry,” the CAN statement concluded.
